Jamie Vardy's name was on the fingertips of England's fans on Saturday, despite not playing a minute of the Euro 2016 opener with Russia.

The Leicester striker was put on the bench by Roy Hodgson despite his stellar season with the Foxes and the call to come in Marseille never came.

Vardy was the second-most tweeted-about player during the game, according to data released by the social network. Goalscorer Eric Dier was the most popular, with captain Wayne Rooney third.

England's 1-1 draw itself was discussed across 1.4million tweets, with France's opening-night win over Romania the subject of 2.3m.

Dier's goal kick-started a run of 42,000 tweets per minute, but that was little compared to the online excitement about Dimitri Payet's wonder winner for France which sparked 89,000 per minute.
