James tells Green to move on

13 Jun 2010 - 15:29:48

David James has urged England goalkeeping rival Robert Green to put his United States blunder behind him.

Green's gaffe when he allowed a tame shot from Clint Dempsey to slip from his grasp and cross the line led to a 1-1 scoreline in England's opening Group C encounter in Rustenburg on Saturday.

The West Ham keeper could lose his starting place to either James or Joe Hart for Friday's second game against Algeria in Cape Town.

But James has urged his rival to forget his high-profile gaffe at the earliest possible opportunity.

"I didn't speak to Robert straight after the game because he had to go for a drugs test," explained James.

"But I know that as a goalkeeper - and we all make a mistake like that sometimes - you just have to put it behind you straight away and get on with the game.

"These things happen and he has to get over it. There is no time to dwell.

"It was one of those things and it changed the game because after that I thought the US team shut up shop and only counter-attacked in the second half."

Meanwhile, James insists he is fit and ready to come in should coach Fabio Capello decide to take Green out of the firing line.

The veteran Portsmouth keeper has been struggling with a knee problem in South Africa but has dismissed suggestions that he is not 100 per cent fit.

"I am ready to play and, of course, I want to play," he said. "I have been around a while and this is not my first World Cup but I know what it is like and I know what to expect."
