James won't be Portsmouth boss

David James will not be making a move into football management with Portsmouth this summer. The goalkeeper had been linked with the vacant position at Fratton Park after Andrew Andronikou, the administrator overseeing the sale of the club, said James, 39, was keen to move into coaching. But he has now stressed that Pompey are keen for a more experienced coach to take charge of the club, who will compete in the Championship next season after finishing bottom of the Premier League. "I know David wants to go into management, but he has not really got the experience at the moment," he told The News. "Really he needs to learn his trade under somebody and needs to get his coaching badges, so I'm not sure whether this is quite the right time for him." James is currently part of the England squad preparing for next month's World Cup finals. He is considering a one-year contract to remain at Portsmouth next year, although it would likely spell the end of his international career.
