Fabian Delph's hopes of making Euro 2016 are effectively over after a groin injury saw him drop of of England's training squad.
The Manchester City midfielder was named in Roy Hodgson's original 26-man long-list but did not travel north for Friday's friendly against Australia at the Stadium of Light.
He will only be considered now if injury strikes elsewhere and he recovers from his own minor ailment.
Hodgson said: "Unfortunately, he has strained a muscle in his groin area.
"He's stayed in Manchester and I've made it clear to him that means probably he won't be with us either in the final 23, unless, of course, we have injuries.
"I've put him on a standby list actually, and he understands and accepts that.
"I don't think it's going to be a really long-term injury for him, so if I needed him and wanted him to come with us it's easy for me to call him and ask him to do so.
"But I have actually said to him with the situation we have with the other 25 players, it might be unlikely."
Delph was always considered an outsider to make the final cut having played a peripheral role at the Etihad Stadium last season.
But Hodgson may find it harder to cull two more players between now and the May 31 deadline.
At least one more must come from the midfield group, with the expectation that one of the five strikers currently in camp will also be surplus to requirements.
