In focus: Wayne Rooney as an England substitute

Wayne Rooney is expected to drop to the bench for England's match against Slovenia on Tuesday night. The Three Lions captain has been used as a substitute on just nine occasions in 117 appearances for England.

Press Association Sport takes an in-depth look at those incidences.

:: Of Rooney's record 53 international goals, only one has come as a substitute - in May in a friendly against Australia where, having possibly glimpsed the future with Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford becoming England's youngest goalscoring debutant, Rooney scored the winner.

:: Rooney's introduction from the bench is most likely to happen within the first 15 minutes of the second half. On six out of nine occasions he has been sent on either at the interval or by the 58th minute. Only once has a manager (Sven Goran Eriksson) left it until 10 minutes from time.

:: Michael Owen, the man who was expected to be the one to break Sir Bobby Charlton's England goalscoring record, is the player whom Rooney has replaced the most (three times).

:: Only twice has Rooney's introduction from the bench coincided with a positive change in the result from the score when he was sent on: Serbia & Montenegro in 2003 when a 1-1 draw was turned into a 2-1 England win; Trinidad and Tobago in 2006 when a 0-0 draw was turned into a 2-0 win.

:: In that Serbia & Montenegro match Rooney was one of five half-time substitutes. Among those coming off was a certain Gareth Southgate, the now England interim manager who has decided to leave his captain on the bench for the game against Slovenia.

:: Rooney has played just 279 minutes as a substitute.
