Horne calls for unity

Alex Horne, the Football Association's acting chief executive, has insisted the furore over Lord Triesman's enforced resignation should not distract from England's World Cup campaign or the bid to host the 2018 tournament. Triesman stood down on Sunday after recordings of him insinuating Spain were seeking to bribe referees in next month's World Cup were printed in the Mail on Sunday. Despite Triesman resignations, Fifa said on Monday they would investigate his comments. It leaves the FA without a chief executive or chairman heading into the biggest tournament in world football. "We are now at a crucial time and the support of the fans and the nation as a whole has never been more important, especially for the World Cup," said Horne. "But it's equally important that we can demonstrate to Fifa and the rest of the world at this time that we are serious about our bid for the World Cup 2018. "The gossip and the nonsense doesn't matter - we are now approaching the business end of the World Cup, where we actually have to perform on the field and that's all that matters."
