Hodgson wants to see more of Jones

England boss Roy Hodgson has warned Phil Jones he must play in defence regularly for Manchester United before he can be considered in his favourite position for England.

His six-minute appearance as a replacement for Phil Jagielka during England's friendly win over Scotland was only the second time in his eight international appearances that Jones played in central defence.

And for all the 21-year-old's undoubted ability, that situation might not change much until he can find a way past Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand at Old Trafford.

"Phil has been a victim of his own versatility," said Hodgson.

"We think he is a very fine player. We like him very much.

"But if he is going to knock Phil Jagielka and Gary Cahill off their perch he is going to have to perform in the Premier League.

"I haven't had an awful lot of chance to see him there."

Rather more is known about Joe Hart.

But after three seasons as England's first choice goalkeeper, Hodgson has sought to reassure the Manchester City man in the wake of the blunder that gifted Scotland their opener.

"The first thing he did at half-time was apologise to me for letting in the goal," said Hodgson.
