Hodgson holds fire on Zaha verdict

Roy Hodgson will decide for himself whether Wilfried Zaha has the right attitude to become an England player.

As widely predicted, Zaha has been elevated back into the senior Three Lions fold after dropping back for the European Under-21 Championships in the summer.

On the basis of the 20-year-old's performances for new club Manchester United in pre-season, the move is richly deserved.

Yet the young England team's capitulation in Israel came amid rumours that former Crystal Palace forward Zaha had not applied himself in the manner Stuart Pearce demanded.

England manager Hodgson ignored that talk when selecting his squad for next Wednesday's friendly against Scotland.

Rather than listen to others, he prefers to speak as he finds.

"It's very dangerous to start taking other people's judgements," he said.

"It would be wrong to start saying I'm going to hold something against a player when I haven't actually been there myself.

"If I pick a player and it turns out that he doesn't have a good attitude, I will make the call then."

Certainly the ease with which Zaha has slotted into the United fold bodes well for a transition at international level beyond his debut as a late substitute during the defeat in Sweden last November.
