Heskey hopes for Roo reunion

05 Mar 2010 - 08:16:20

Aston Villa's Emile Heskey believes his strike partnership with Wayne Rooney could be key for England at the World Cup.

Head coach Fabio Capello preferred Totteham's Jermain Defoe alongside Rooney in the midweek friendly against Egypt.

Peter Crouch came on for his Spurs team-mate at half-time and scored twice in a 3-1 victory over the African champions at Wembley.

But despite being left on the bench in the final warm-up game before Capello names his provisional World Cup squad, Heskey still believes he has a good chance of starting the first game of the tournament against the United States.

"Wayne is a great player and has been in terrific form recently and hopefully he can keep going with that," said the 57-times capped striker.

"He has done a lot in his career already - considering his age - and he can go on to do even more.

"Whoever plays up front can make a good partnership, but the one with Wayne and myself has been quite successful in qualifying for the World Cup and it came to us both pretty naturally really.

"We do a lot of work in training when we're together but it is fairly instinctive when we're on the pitch."
