Harry Kane believes England's confidence in the final third of the pitch could still be suffering as a result of the poor showing at Euro 2016.
A stoppage-time goal from Adam Lallana saw the Three Lions win 1-0 in Slovakia to give new manager Sam Allardyce victory in his first game in charge.
It also got England off to the perfect start as they begin their qualification campaign for the 2018 World Cup with three hard-earned points.
But the finals in Russia are a long way off and it is still the disappointment of this summer's European Championships which hangs over the current squad.
Eight of the 11 players picked by Allardyce in Trnava started the shock 2-1 defeat to Iceland in the round of 16 stage in France, a result which cost previous manager Roy Hodgson his job.
Kane was part of England's largely misfiring attacking ranks during the tournament and is yet to score for Tottenham this season having been the Premier League's top marksman in the last campaign.
And the 23-year-old admitted the disappointment of the summer could be the reason England are still struggling at the top end of the pitch after it took Allardyce's men 64 minutes to register a shot on target on Sunday.
Asked if the lack of confidence in the final third was a hangover from the Euros, Kane said: "It could be.
"It is difficult sometimes when teams like Slovakia drop off and make it very difficult to play through, you have to be very patient and make sure that ball is spot on every time or they will cut it out.
"It is all about that final pass, putting a bit more care into it, but like I said we played well and could have won two or three-nil.
"We were very patient, we limited them to very few chances, we created some good chances but maybe the final ball again, whether it was a cross or a through ball, could have been a little bit better.
"But we are getting better in every game and it is a really boost that we won and hopefully we can kick on now in the rest of the group games."
Kane operated as a lone striker right up until the point he was replaced by substitute Daniel Sturridge as England went in search of a winner which would eventually come in the dying seconds as Lallana struck his first international goal.
Often cutting an isolated figure at the spearhead of England's attack, Kane was happy with his own display even if he is still without a goal since the friendly victory over Turkey in May.
"When you play up front on your own you are not always going to have players around you and I think it is about having that battle and holding it up for the team, running in behind and I think we did that well." he said.
"It was a good battle up there and we created some good chances, I had some half-chances that on another day could have sneaked in but overall I was happy with the way things went."
Kane was pleased to get Allardyce off to a winning start ahead of a qualification double-header against Malta and Slovenia next month.
"We are all delighted for him," he added.
"With a new manager coming in you want to get him a good victory to start off with, he has been great all week.
"We have had a really good camp, good training sessions and we are delighted to reward him with a win."
