Hargreaves set for shock England call-up

Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves could be the surprise inclusion in Fabio Capello's 30-strong provisional squad for this summer's World Cup, despite having played less than a minute of first-team football in the last 18 months.

Capello reportedly views the 29-year-old as a like-for-like replacement for Gareth Barry, who the England manager said yesterday would take "too long" to recover from the ankle injury he sustained against Tottenham.

Hargreaves was widely regarded as England's best player at the 2006 Finals, but has suffered a torrid run of injuries and was said to be low in confidence by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this season.

The former Bayen Munich player missed United's final game of the season against Stoke through illness, but Capello is reportedly keen to assess his fitness and mental attitude at close quarters.

If Hargreaves does make the initial 30, West Ham's Scott Parker looks set to miss out, while Chelsea's Joe Cole could also be left disappointed.
