Roy Hodgson has told England fans across the country they should not expect too much too soon from Harry Kane.
Kane, who has scored 29 goals this season, is in line to make his England debut against Lithuania or Italy over the next week.
Hodgson thinks the Tottenham striker has a long and successful career ahead of him, but believes he may take time to adjust to the international arena.
''It's fantastic, what he has done,'' the England manager said.
''It's very tough for a young player to come into a top team like Tottenham with demands and expectations, and to shoulder aside people like (Emmanuel) Adebayor and (Roberto) Soldado and make the place your own, and then not just to play well and keep your place but score a lot of goals - that is some achievement.
''But I do really hope people in general will have a more reasonable approach and say, 'let's give this guy a chance. He is going to have some good and bad games and hopefully he will have 10 or 12 years in the Premier League and England matches in front of him - let's not build him up to the best thing we have ever had or a flop on the basis of a month or two or a couple of games or so'.
''But I am delighted for him. If he gets his chance to play in these games, I am sure he won't let anyone down.''
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick also hailed Kane, describing his form as "sensational".
England vice-captain Gary Cahill knows better than most how destructive Kane can be.
The centre-back was part of the Chelsea team that was destroyed by the forward and his Spurs team-mates on New Year's Day.
Kane struck twice in the 5-3 victory at White Hart Lane.
"It was a bad day at the office," Cahill recalled.
"I was respectful of how well he was playing and how much of a threat he is. But, as you've seen in the game, that went out of the window.
"He is quick, but he's a powerful boy and physically he's more than capable of playing in this league, as you've seen this season.
"For me, the attributes are all there. It's about how he progresses in the next few years. This year he has been phenomenal and he deserves his place in the squad."
England travel to Turin for a friendly against Italy four days after Friday's Euro 2016 qualifier against Lithuania with reports suggesting Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling will be allowed to return to his club after the Wembley clash.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has complained of the player feeling tired this season and was thought to be unhappy when striker Daniel Sturridge injured his thigh on international duty and went on to miss five months of the campaign.
Sturridge and fellow Red Adam Lallana have both withdrawn from Hodgson's squad, with Luke Shaw and Fraser Forster also joining long-term absentees Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Ben Foster on the injury list over the weekend.
James Milner, Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines did not take part in training on Tuesday. They were restricted to gym work, but there was some better news later in the day when Fabian Delph joined up with the squad after overcoming a stomach bug.
Hodgson reckons more players will pull out of the squad before the weekend
''I fear we are going to lose a few more,'' he said.
''Already there are one or two that I know won't be able to join us against Italy because of the current problems that they are dealing with.''
