    Gerrard eyes top spot

    23 Mar 2007 - 09:07:10

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is determined to prove that England has a good team and not just talented individuals.

England's Euro 2008 qualifying campaign has been a stuttering affair, with the autumn defeat to Croatia leaving Steve McClaren's side third in the Group E table.

Poor displays in friendlies against Spain and Holland have done little to inspire confidence since, but Gerrard insists the team can still qualify for the finals.

He said: "I love playing for my country. There's more pressure than you experience at club level and defeats with England are probably more frustrating because you have to wait a month or two before you can put it right.

"With Liverpool, there's always another match just around the corner. That's what all the players have to understand coming into these games.

"Third place isn't good enough. We need to get back to the top of the table as soon as possible.

"We have a great chance over these next few days to pick up six points and the table will look a lot healthier if we achieve that.

"It's not all doom and gloom. We have all the ingredients to become a successful team in the future. Everyone knows we have fantastic players. What we have to do is prove we can be a good team."
