Gerrard back in training

Key midfielder Steven Gerrard was able to resume training with the England squad on Thursday morning.

The Liverpool star was forced to sit out Wednesday's workout because of a back problem, but now looks on course to play in England's World Cup opener against Paraguay on Saturday.

The news means Wayne Rooney is likely to be the only player not available for selection for the Group B clash in Frankfurt.

Rooney was back in training on Thursday after being passed fit to take his place in England's squad following a scan on his foot injury on Wednesday.

However, the Manchester United striker is unlikely to play any part in the group stage of the finals.
