England captain Steven Gerrard reflected on a job well done Tuesday as his side ended the first round top of the heap in Group D despite a string of ill luck with injuries and suspensions.
"It was a difficult group and our aim was to win it. Its fantastic that we have done," said Gerrard after the 1-0 win over Ukraine.
"Wayne Rooney's goal shows how important he is to the team. He adds something different and a cutting edge and can score goals from anywhere."
Rooney's goal came after the United striker had served a two match suspension.
The win means England avoid Spain in the quarters, although Italy may also prove formidable rivals.
