Gary Lineker's mother has died, the former England captain has announced.

Margaret Lineker, who was 76, had been ill for some time and passed away on Tuesday afternoon.

Lineker revealed the news on Twitter, writing: "I am profoundly saddened to tell you that my wonderful, beautiful mother has left us. She will though live on in my heart and mind. #RIPMum"

The 54-year-old former Leicester, Everton and Tottenham striker revealed a few days ago that he would not be hosting Match of the Day on Saturday night due to her condition.

Brother Wayne revealed on Twitter that Margaret had passed away at 1pm with family and close friends by her side. He added that she had been suffering with renal and kidney problems and was having dialysis three times a week.

Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand was one of many to offer his condolences on Twitter. He wrote: "Thoughts are with @GaryLineker & his family."
