Gareth Southgate is improving the England team - Spain boss Julen Lopetegui

Spain head coach Julen Lopetegui believes England are improving under caretaker boss Gareth Southgate.

Southgate, the England Under-21s head coach, will learn after Tuesday's friendly with Spain if he is to be appointed England manager on a permanent basis.

Lopetegui was Spain's age-group boss before spending two years with Porto in Portugal and returning to the national team last summer as successor to Vicente del Bosque.

England have won two and drawn one of the three competitive matches under Southgate following Sam Allardyce's one-game reign. Last Friday's 3-0 win over Scotland saw England top of 2018 World Cup qualifying Group F, with many predicting afterwards that Southgate will be confirmed in the job following Tuesday night's friendly with the 2010 World Cup winners.

Lopetegui said: "He has the challenge now. He is, I think, doing a very good job and I wish him the best.

"I think he's improving the English team. They show different skills in offensive phases."

Barcelona defender Sergio Busquets reminded England of their failure at Euro 2016, which saw Roy Hodgson depart as boss after the defeat to Iceland, but believes the Wembley fixture remains an important one.

Busquets was drawing comparisons between England falling short of expectations in major tournaments and Spain doing so.

Spain were beaten in the first knock-out round by Italy and, like England, exited the 2014 World Cup in the group stage.

Busquets said: "England are a great side full of top players. Like ourselves a little bit recently, they've not done so well in tournaments.

"They've not had the best of fortune in the World Cup and the Euros.

"But it's still a big game tomorrow night, both for individuals in the Spanish set-up and also as a group, as a team.

"We're a new group, we've got lots of new faces, youngsters who joined the group recently and we've not made so many games with the new manager.

"It's a great opportunity to fight and battle against a top side tomorrow night and continue to progress as a team."

Manchester City midfielder David Silva trained away from the main group, wearing trainers, not boots, at Wembley on Monday evening.

But the Spanish football federation insisted he would be available to face England.

Spain top World Cup qualifying Group G ahead of Italy after four games and want to finish the international year on a high.

Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta said: "It's a really prestigious friendly game against a top national side.

"They've been doing quite well recently, in the qualifiers. It's a good challenge for us.

"We all want to do well tomorrow so we can finish off this international get-together with a good result."
