From London to Rio De Janeiro - Who is fighting for their ticket to Brazil - Forwards

07 March 2014 10:27

England will head to Rio de Janiero facing a tough group in the upcoming 2014 World Cup. The Three Lions’ defence will be tested against the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani after England drew Uruguay in Group D. They will also be up against the Italians who knocked Roy Hodgson’s side out of Euro 2012. The group is completed with Costa Rica who are no doubt the underdogs in arguably the group of death.

With England’s domestic season roaring to a conclusion with almost no difference at the top and bottom of the table. We take a look at who will be vying for their chance to fly to Brazil.

FORWARDS

Definite

Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool)

Probable

Daniel Welbeck (Manchester United)

Andros Townsend (Tottenham)

Possible

Raheem Sterling (Liverpool)

Jay Rodriguez (Southampton)

Ashley Young (Manchester United)

Andy Carroll (West Ham)

Rickie Lambert (Southampton)

Most of England’s hopes will be pinned upon Wayne Rooney and Daniel Sturridge firing them to glory this year. The Manchester United striker has bagged 11 goals for the Red Devils this season which has been hampered by injuries. Liverpool’s in form forward has been in electrifying form alongside Luis Suarez and has racked up 18 goals for the Reds this season. Fans will be hoping the two can find a formidable partnership for the national side.

Andros Townsend is another favourite of Hodgson and is keen to link up with Walker on the right side of England line-up. Townsend has impressed since making his debut scoring against Montenegro. Daniel Welbeck should travel as back-up for the strikers.

Raheem Sterling deserves a place in the 23 man squad after finding his form under Brendan Rodgers. The 19 year old has played his part in Liverpool’s fantastic season partnership Sturridge and Suarez is a deadly forward three. His electric pace will be a useful weapon for England with six goals and six assists for Liverpool. Jay Rodriguez was another who was involved in the England squad last year as well as Rickie Lambert who remain outsiders for a place. Andy Carroll’s season has been plagued with injury despite making a good comeback his red card may have sealed his fate along with Ashley Young who has failed to impress at Old Trafford.
