Forster-Caskey: We believe

Jake Forster-Caskey believes England Under-21s have the ability, confidence and togetherness to win this summer's European Championship.

This is the Young Lions' fifth straight appearance in the finals, albeit they have failed to get out the group stage in the past two editions.

There is belief that such an embarrassing early exit will be avoided this time, though, with Gareth Southgate's side arriving in the Czech Republic brimming with confidence.

So much so, in fact, that Brighton midfielder Forster-Caskey believes they can bring home the trophy.

"I believe we can win it," he said. "I think everybody believes that we can win it.

"We're all full of confidence and we're training well. I think anything can happen.

"We've got some great individuals here, the likes of Harry (Kane) and other players that have been to the first-team and come back down.

"We've got some great players and great team spirit, so hopefully that takes us far in the tournament."

The squad arrived at their Olomouc base on Sunday, when a thunderstorm led the players to make a hasty retreat to the bus.

Monday went better and the strong team bond is helping the build-up to Thursday's Group B opener against Portugal.

That may well have been disrupted had Southgate chosen to cast aside those that got them to the final by plumping for eligible senior players like of Raheem Sterling, Jack Wilshere and Phil Jones.

However, Forster-Caskey was never particularly concerned about losing his place to a more experienced compatriot and is determined to make his mark this summer.

"The players have got us here and the players are in the first team are first-team players," he said.

"Maybe that was a difficult one to choose form, but we're a tight-knit group and we'll just do the best we can when the games come around."

Portugal will certainly prove a tough first test, having made the finals with the only perfect record in qualification.

However, Southgate's men will be boosted ahead of the trip to Uherske Hradiste by November's friendly between the sides at Turf Moor.

Danny Ings' brace and a Carl Jenkinson effort secured England a 3-1 win, although Forster-Caskey is not reading much into that result

"I think the game will be different," he said, having started that night in Burnley. "I think they had a couple of players missing and we had a few players missing as well.

"The game will be different and it is tournament football, it is not like a friendly so we'll go into that game with some different names and different ambitions, but hopefully the same outcome."
