Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has praised England's battling 1-1 draw against the fancied French in their Euro 2012 Group D opener.
Eriksson, England's first foreign head coach from 2001 to 2006, wrote in his Expressen newspaper column that England had played "better than well" against the French.
"Things looked absolutely correct in attack but it is the defensive bloc which is the most important thing for England's game," opined Eriksson, who guided England to the 2002 and 2006 World Cup quarter-finals as well as the last eight of Euro 2004.
"Roy Hodgson can be very satisfied for having held the group favourites to a draw."
As regards his own country's 2-1 loss to Ukraine, Eriksson wrote that "I was really sorry for Sweden. But it's not all over for them."
The Swedes will now hope to recover by beating England in their second game on Friday.
