Striker Daniel Sturridge will miss England's trip to Brazil later this week after injuring an ankle in his side's 1-1 friendly draw with the Republic of Ireland, manager Roy Hodgson revealed on Wednesday.

The Liverpool player was making his first international start in the game at Wembley Stadium and set up Frank Lampard for England's equaliser in the 23rd minute, but he was stretchered off 10 minutes later.

Sturridge later underwent scans, and Hodgson confirmed that he would not be able to play in Sunday's prestigious friendly at the renovated Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

"He's not going to Brazil, which is very sad for us," Hodgson said.

"He had a good start and we were very sad to lose him. He hadn't played for a while and was carrying a slight injury. I fear it will keep him out for a few weeks, but we don't think it's a fracture."
