    Foot woe for Rooney

    30 Apr 2006 - 07:46:56

Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney could miss this summer's World Cup Finals in Germany after sustaining a foot injury in his club side's 3-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday.

The 20-year-old was caught by Paulo Ferreira in the closing minutes of the game and immediately fell to the ground in agony.

He was stretchered off and will have the injury assessed later this weekend.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said: "We don't know the extent of the injury at the moment.

"We'll have to assess it. He's in the right medical hands and will go back to Manchester to keep an eye on it.

"He's a bit sore and I was concerned. But then again I'm always concerned when a player is stretchered off. We've had a few bad injuries this season."

Rooney broke the same foot in the Euro 2004 quarter-final defeat against Portugal and was sidelined for three months as he missed the start of United's 2004-05 Premiership campaign.
