FIFA investigate abuse claim

FIFA have opened an investigation following a complaint made by the Football Association that Emile Heskey was racially abused during England's victory over Croatia last week.

The Wigan Athletic striker was allegedly targeted by sections of the home support during England's 4-1 World Cup qualifying victory at the Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb on September 10.

Afterwards, Heskey shrugged off the incident after calling the pocket of Croatia fans: "ignorant people'.

Immediately after the game, the FA confirmed their decision to approach the global governing body with a complaint, saying: "We can confirm that we will be making a report to FIFA about the racist chanting aimed at Emile Heskey by some Croatia fans.

"It is unacceptable for anyone to be subjected to racial abuse and we will be asking FIFA to investigate this.

"The FA and England team are determined to do all they can to eradicate any form of racism from football and society."

Croatia were recently handed a fine by UEFA after their fans were found guilty of racially abusing Turkey players during Euro 2008.
