Fifa's ethics committee will investigate the comments made by Lord Triesman that led to him resigning as chairman of the Football Association and England's bid to host the 2018 World Cup finals. Jérôme Valcke, the Fifa secretary general, asked the committee to examine quotes attributed to Triesman that Spain were seeking to bribe referees during this summer's World Cup finals. He made the comments during a date with a former aide which was taped without his knowledge and printed in the Mail on Sunday. Spain are competing with England to host the 2018 World Cup finals. They have put forward a joint bid with Portugal, while Russia have also bid and there is a joint bid from Holland and Belgium.
