Ferguson backs Foster for England

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson still believes Ben Foster can become England's number one goalkeeper - but does not think he will play at the World Cup.

Viewed by many as Fabio Capello's likely first-choice for this summer's showpiece in South Africa and felt good enough to be handed an England start in successive matches against Belarus and Brazil, Foster has had to accept his chances of earning a call-up to the 30-man provisional squad are non-existent after a slump in form.

Ferguson said: "He has the talent to be England's goalkeeper and we're conscious of that."

He added: "We'd like to help but unfortunately he's not played enough football to get him on that plane to South Africa."
