Fergie: Fab can field Rooney
06 Feb 2009 - 14:02:52
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says he will allow England coach Fabio Capello to decide whether Wayne Rooney features in next week's friendly against Spain.
The 23-year-old striker has not played for United since the 1-0 win at home to Wigan Athletic in mid-January, having limped off with a hamstring strain after scoring the only goal of the game against the Latics.
However, Ferguson believes that an appearance in the Sevilla encounter next Wednesday could help Rooney on the road to a full recovery.
He commented: "I have not spoken to Fabio, but I hope to do so in order to explain the situation.
"He can then decide, after dialogue with the physios, whether it is worth taking Wayne to Seville. I have no strong issue with that.
"It is a question of whether he would play or be a substitute, which is the same position as I am in.
"It is up to Fabio. I really have no strong objection to that."
