Rio Ferdinand is now expected to miss the start of the season with the knee injury that kept him out of the World Cup. The centre-back, 31, suffered damaged knee ligaments during England's first training session after arriving in South Africa for the tournament. Sir Alex Ferguson, the Manchester United manager, had suggested a return for the start of the season when Newcastle  visit Old Trafford on August 16 was on the cards but that now appears unlikel.y. "Rio is probably around six weeks away from playing," he told the club's official website.
