Ferdinand relieved to regain armband
Rio Ferdinand will captain England against Montenegro on Tuesday night, a role he was not sure he would be able to reprise. The Manchester United centre-back was given the armband in February after John Terry, the previous Three Lions captain, was revealed to have had an affair with his former club and international teammate Wayne Bridge. Ferdinand had to vacate the position when a knee injury ruled him out of the World Cup, with the Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard taking on the responsibility in South Africa. England's team spirit was hardly impressive in that tournament, though, so it was no great surprise that Ferdinand stepped back into that role. It seems Ferdinand was nervous, though. He has lost the captaincy at Manchester United to Nemanja Vidic, largely due to his injury problems, and feared he would go through the same process at international level. "With all the hype that surrounds these kinds of situations, it does bring an element of doubt into your mind. You end up thinking 'Will I or won't I?'," he said. "As a kid, you dream about captaining your country. The manager has deemed me the right person to captain this team. When he told me it was a proud moment."
