Ferdinand on course for September return

Rio Ferdinand is expected to return to first-team duties with Manchester United at the end of September. The centre-back injured a knee during England's first training session in South Africa ahead of the World Cup this summer, keeping him out of the start of the season. Sir Alex Ferguson, the United coach, initially suggested he would be able to return last week when the Red Devils opened their Premier League campaign by hosting Newcastle last week. United were comfortable 3-0 winners in that match, and Ferguson has confirmed the former Leeds man is expected to return towards the end of next month. "We are still thinking the end of September for Rio. It was a medial ligament problem rather than a cruciate, so the recovery time is exactly what we thought," he said. "It was a freak. It is nothing to do with his back. We just had to treat it the proper way. These things are never easy."
