Rio Ferdinand, the England captain, could return from knee injury in time for the start of the new season. The centre-back suffered knee ligament damage during the first Three Lions training session after arriving in South Africa for the World Cup finals. Manchester United said on Monday that they expected his total recovery time to be 10 weeks, meaning he could feature on the opening day of the Premier League season when the Red Devils take on Newcastle at Old Trafford. There is also good news for Ferdinand's club and former international teammate Michael Owen, who will be able to return to action during the club's pre-season tour of North America. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker suffered a hamstring injury during the Carling Cup final win over Aston Villa, a match in which he scored United's equalising goal after 12 minutes. "I'll be ready for the start of the season, although I might have to miss one or two pre-season games on the American tour," he said
