England go into the tournament with expectation levels significantly lower then years gone by.
With Fabio Capello's resignation, John Terry being stripped of the captaincy and Wayne Rooney's suspension, England have not had the most ideal build-up to a major tournament.
England failed to qualify for Euro 2008 and were poor at the 2010 World Cup.
An inconsistent qualifying campaign highlighted a lack of creativity and ability to break teams down, although on occasions the quality of the players was made clear with convincing wins over Bulgaria and friendly victories against Spain and Sweden.
Roy Hodgson has been appointed as the new manager, but he has already experienced major blows to his plans with injuries ruling out John Ruddy, Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard.
Darren Bent and Jack Wilshere also miss out due to injury.
Wayne Rooney's place in the starting XI for the opening two games could go to Liverpool forward Andy Carroll or Manchester United's Danny Welbeck.
Joe Hart is one England player that could impress, the Manchester City keeper has grown into his role as first choice keeper and has been one bright spark for England in recent times.
A wildcard for the tournament could be Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. The youngster has been impressive this season since signing from Southampton and possesses the pace and power to be a real threat to defences.
