Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is holding talks in Iran to become the next coach of Persepolis FC, following his departure from Leicester City last month, the Iranian side and media said Thursday.

Eriksson arrived on Iran's Kish Island, in the Gulf, on Wednesday and the negotiations had begun, the Persepolis football club website said.

The website of Iranian state television said Eriksson would later fly to Tehran to finalise the deal.

British newspapers this week reported that the struggling Iranian side was looking to spend around £1 million ($1.6 million, 1.2 million euros) to secure Eriksson.

Leicester City said last month they let the 63-year-old Swede go by "mutual agreement."

Eriksson had signed a two-year contract with the team just a year earlier, after a number of unsuccessful spells -- including with Manchester City, Mexico and League Two outfit Notts County -- since leaving the England job, which he held 2001-2006.
