    England debut for Carson

    16 Nov 2007 - 16:59:27

England boss Steve McClaren will hand Scott Carson his first international start in Friday's friendly against Austria while David Beckham returns to win his 98th cap.

Liverpool goalkeeper Carson, who is currently on a season-long loan with Aston Villa, takes over in goal from Paul Robinson while Joleon Lescott starts in the centre of defence alongside Sol Campbell.

Frank Lampard returns to the starting line-up following injury in place of Gareth Barry, while his Chelsea team-mate Wayne Bridge comes in at left-back for his first England appearance of the season.

Michael Owen will partner Peter Crouch in attack as Wayne Rooney is suspended and Emile Heskey injured.

McClaren told the FA's official website: "We're looking for different things from this game and different personnel.

"Scott Carson has been around the squad for a long time. His performances for Aston Villa have been very good and I've said all along that this is an ideal opportunity for him to experience international football.

"Gareth Barry was excellent in the last three games and Frank Lampard didn't feature, but Frank's form for Chelsea has been a revelation since and he's playing some of his best football.

"We need Sol Campbell's experience in the centre. I think Micah Richards is important to us at right-back and he's shown that in some games - going forward he's very effective. But maybe at half-time or after 60 minutes we'll move him inside."

England's starting line-up for the game in Vienna will be: Scott Carson, Micah Richards, Sol Campbell, Joleon Lescott, Wayne Bridge, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Michael Owen, Peter Crouch.
