England Women were denied a first win against France since 1974 after Toni Duggan saw a late strike ruled out.
With the game goalless heading into injury time at the end of the friendly at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium, substitute Duggan found the net.
But the striker was ruled to have controlled the ball with her arm rather than her chest and France were awarded a free-kick.
Not since a clash at Plough Lane 42 years ago have England defeated France, who sit third in the world rankings, two places above their opponents.
There have been nine defeats and six draws in the intervening years, with the most recent match a 1-0 victory for France in the group stage of last year's World Cup.
That result did not cost England, who went on to finish third, and they showed the confidence they continue to take from that stunning run as they began a series of games building up to next summer's European Championship.
The first half was dominated by France without the visitors managing to really threaten Karen Bardsley's goal.
England upped the tempo after the break and Jade Moore gave a taste of things to come with a long-range shot over the bar.
Experienced France goalkeeper Sarah Bouhaddi looked shaky at times but England were unable to take advantage and had to settle for a 0-0 draw.
Mark Sampson's side next take on Spain in Guadalajara next Tuesday before a clash with Euro 2017 hosts Holland on November 29.
