- England 1-1 United States
Robert Green - 4
Green's terrible mistake gifted Clint Dempsey a goal and cost England all three points. A sharp save in the second half was in the positives column, but Green will surely be left out by Fabio Capello after losing his nerve on the biggest stage.
Glen Johnson - 7
Arguably one of England's best players. Johnson got forward well and delivered some telling balls into the box. The Liverpool full-back competed well and looked solid defensively.
John Terry - 7
A commanding performance from the Chelsea man. Terry won everything in the air and never looked in trouble at the back.
Ledley King - 6
King's injury curse struck again, and we may have seen the last of him as an England starter at the tournament. After all, can Capello really afford to waste a substitution every match?
Ashley Cole - 6
Solid, if unspectacular. Cole's passing and movement was good, but he failed to penetrate going forward.
James Milner - 5
Milner was anonymous before injury saw him depart the field in the first half. Calls for Joe Cole will be louder than ever.
Frank Lampard - 5
Largely ineffectual performance from England's perennial underachiever. Lampard struck one crisp shot, but was otherwise a passenger. Will he ever recreate his club form on the international stage?
Steve Gerrard - 8
England's best player by some distance. Gerrard was forceful, dynamic and played with real conviction. If only his team-mates had followed his lead.
Aaron Lennon - 6
Lennon had plenty of possession, but all too often failed to deliver a telling final ball. Composure was lacking.
Emile Heskey - 7
Heskey set up Gerrard for England's goal and put in a wholehearted display. He won plenty of balls in the air and linked play well.
Wayne Rooney - 6
There were sparks of inspiration, but ultimately Rooney left us disappointed. Surely there is more to come against Algeria.
Jamie Carragher - 6
Worrying exposed early in the second half, Carragher's pace is a real concern. That moment aside, he coped well and will likely start against Algeria.
Shaun Wright-Phillips - 6
Like Lennon, SWP had plenty of the ball, but the quality was low.
Peter Crouch - 6
Had little time to assert himself.
