England v Switzerland: Match Preview

08 September 2015 09:19

England have already qualified ahead of this Euro 2016 qualification match but will be keen to give the home support plenty to cheer, many of whom are arriving in the hope of witnessing a piece of history. The focus will very much be on Wayne Rooney and the possibility of him scoring goal number 50 although the 29-year-old striker remains patient.

"It would be nice to do it at Wembley," Rooney said.

"It would be nice to do it and move on from that and concentrate on the team again. That's the most important thing. To try to win the game tomorrow and finish the group top.

"If it happens tomorrow then great. If not, it's not something that will concern me. The main concern is the game.

"I feel I've still got quite a lot of games left to play for England. If I was sat here saying 'I just want to get 50 goals' then I'd be lying.

"I'd be disappointed if I ended my England career on 50 goals. I want to kick on and try to score as many goals as I can.

"I've still got plenty of games to do that. Hopefully by the time I finish playing it will be more goals than 50."

The England captain is just one goal shy of becoming the all-time England leading scorer after drawing level with the 49 goal mark of Bobby Charlton following his penalty against San Marino. Switzerland however will be a whole different proposition to San Marino and sported some seven Bundesliga players on Saturday. Whilst England are now through, Switzerland still have work to do and would dearly love to gain a measure of revenge after their 2-0 defeat to the Three Lions last September.

The battle is now on for the second qualification spot although Switzerland should still comfortably qualify themselves as they are leading third-place Estonia by five points and Slovenia by six.

Switzerland made a remarkable comeback after being 2-0 down to Slovenia with 10 minutes remaining in the contest before Josip Drmic and Valentin Stocker strike twice to tie the contest before Drmic’s strike deep in stoppage time completed the turnaround and earned the Swiss all three points.

To be fair to the Slovenian outfit the Swiss were strong in possession with 63% and 452 passes completed compared to 173 and the Swiss showed great character to keep fighting and pressing that superiority even with just ten minutes of normal time remaining.

Switzerland will have momentum and this will be a great advantage according to Yann Sommer who will be expected to be goalkeeper again on Tuesday.

"The fact we have shown so much character gives us a big boost and a lot of confidence for the game in England." He said

Hodgson was the manager of Switzerland from 1992 to 1995 and he will be expected to use the opportunity to experiment a little in his final few games in Group E.

"I'm not sure early qualification gives us any particular advantage because we are going to take a lot of time to plan and improve anyway," Hodgson said.

"What it could do is give me the opportunity for experimentation because we did not get that ahead of the World Cup when we had to win our last two qualifiers to get to Brazil."
