England's Euro 2016 campaign gets under way on Saturday with a Group B clash against Russia in Marseille.

Here, football.co.uk takes a look at six past meetings.

USSR 2 England 2

Gothenburg, World Cup group stage, June 8, 1958

In their first match of the 1958 World Cup Walter Winterbottom's England battled back to secure a point after goals from Nikita Simonyan and Aleksandr Ivanov had seen them fall 2-0 behind before the hour mark. Derek Kevan pulled one back and Tom Finney then levelled with a penalty five minutes from time.

USSR 1 England 0

Gothenburg, World Cup group stage play-off, June 17, 1958

With both sides having ended up with three points from as many group games a play-off was required to send one of them into the quarter-finals - and it was the USSR who took the spot thanks to Anatoli Ilyin's 68th-minute effort.

England 2 USSR 0

Rome, European Championship third-place play-off, June 8, 1968

World champions England took third spot at the European Championship three days on from losing their semi-final 1-0 to Yugoslavia in Florence. Alf Ramsey's men netted in each half through Bobby Charlton and Geoff Hurst.

England 1 USSR 3

Frankfurt, European Championship group stage, June 18, 1988

Bobby Robson's England ended a miserable Euro 88 campaign bottom of Group 2 after suffering this, their third straight defeat. They were 1-0 down inside three minutes via a Sergei Aleinikov goal and after Tony Adams' swift equaliser, Oleksiy Mykhailychenko's effort made it 2-1 around the half-hour, with Viktor Pasulko then wrapping things up after the break.

England 3 Russia 0

London, European Championship qualifier, September 12, 2007

England had had some disappointing results in their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign up to this point but looked in fine fettle at Wembley as Michael Owen's first-half brace and a late Rio Ferdinand strike steered Steve McClaren's men to three points.

Russia 2 England 1

Moscow, European Championship qualifier, October 17, 2007

England's hopes of reaching Euro 2008 suffered a major blow on the Luzhniki Stadium's artificial pitch as Russia came from behind to beat them. Wayne Rooney put the visitors ahead but his foul with around 20 minutes to go led to a penalty converted by substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko, who then promptly added the winner just a few moments later.
