England v France: Player ratings

12 June 2012 13:14
England player ratings from their opening game of Euro 2012 against France.

Joe Hart - 6
Made an excellent save from Diarra but could have done better with the goal. He maybe saw it late but will be disappointed to have not saved it.

Glen Johnson - 7
Solid showing from the right-back who didnt bomb forward as much as he is perhaps used to. Done fantastically well to stop Benzema from scoring.

John Terry - 7
With questions being raised about his inclusion in the 23-man squad, he responded with a no nonsense defensive display.

Jolean Lescott - 8 (Man of the Match)
Scored the goal that gave England the lead and was unbeatable at the back. Only playing because of the injury to Cahill but proved he is worthy of a place in the team.

Ashely Cole - 7

Like Glen Johnson, he didn't venture forward as much as he normally does for Chelsea. He put in a good shift and kept the French attackers at bay

James Milner - 6
Should have scored early on, but worked hard for the team. Did what was expecting and people can have no major complaints.

Scott Parker - 7
Got stuck in and did what he does best. Made a superb block to deny Malouda and did his job well in the centre of midfield.

Steven Gerrard - 7
Put in the cross that lead to England's goal. Another one who worked incredibly hard for the team and lead by example.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 6
A shock inclusion in the starting XI and gave France some scares early in the game. Looked sharp and it will be interesting to see if he retains his place in the team.

Ashley Young - 6
Played behind Welbeck and did well with an excellent pass that split open the French defence and lead to Milner's wasted chance.

Danny Welbeck - 6
He got the nod over Andy Carroll and his work-rate was excellent. Didn't have much of a supply from his team-mates.

Substitutes

Jordan Henderson 5 - Had no real impact on the game but did fine.
Jermain Defoe - 5  Gave France one scare, but also had little time to make an impression
Theo Walcott - 5 - Not enough time to impact.
