England U17 Turkey U17
The England U17 side came from two goals down to draw with Turkey in their opening game of the four-team Lincolnshire tournament on Wednesday night. Hallam Hope and Matty Regan scored early in the second-half to complete the turnaround at Sincil Bank, home of Lincoln City, after a lacklustre first-half showing from John Peacock's side. Ibrahim Yilmaz put Turkey ahead after 17 minutes when he turned in Hakan Calhanoglu's ball across the six-yard box. Yimaz doubled Turkey's advantage with another easy finish, this time after Beykan Simsek had done the hard work before pulling the ball back. England's only real chance of the opening half was a Max Clayton shot from inside the area that was saved by the visiting keeper Sercan Sen. Turkey should have been even further ahead, with Kadir Ari and Simsek orchestrating their best play. Seeking to get back into the game, Peacock made two changes: Matthias Fanimo and Luke Hendry came on. Turkey also made the surprising decision to rake of their goalkeeper Sen, who had been largely untroubled but did what he had to without any fuss, with Yusuf Mersin. It was not an easy induction to the match for Mersin, who found himself facing a penalty after five minutes of the second-half. Hope was tripped inside the area, and converted the spot-kick by sending Mersin the wrong way. Regan levelled for the young Three Lions three minutes later when he headed home after a corner-kick led to a goalmouth scramble. Adam Morgan missed England's best chance to win the match, when he pulled the ball wide from six yards. Hakan Calhanoglu had a late shot saved by Jordan Pickford in the England goal. The tournament had started earlier in the day with Portugal coming from behind three times to defeat Australia 4-3 at Glanford Park, home of Scunthorpe United. Helder Costa was their star man, grabbing a hat-trick - including the late winner. England's next game in the tournament is at Blundell Park, in Grimsby, on Friday night against Australia before finishing against Portugal on Sunday in Scunthorpe.
