England call up Shelvey, Bertrand after Gibbs injury

England manager Roy Hodgson has called up Chelsea left-back Ryan Bertrand and Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey after Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs was forced to withdraw from his squad for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Gibbs has been ruled out with a thigh injury suffered in Arsenal's 3-1 win at West Ham on Saturday and Bertrand will act as his replacement, while Shelvey is promoted from the England Under-21 squad as cover for Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.

Lampard is a doubt for San Marino's visit to Wembley on Friday and the following Tuesday's trip to Poland after suffering a knee problem in his club's 4-1 victory against Norwich on Saturday.

"Ryan Bertrand and Jonjo Shelvey have been added to the England squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup Qualifiers with San Marino and Poland," a statement on the FA's website announced on Monday.

"Arsenal defender Kieran Gibbs is out of the squad having suffered an injury at the weekend. Chelsea defender Bertrand joins the squad in addition to Liverpool's Shelvey, who is promoted from the Under-21 squad."
