A Lianne Sanderson goal earned England victory yesterday in the Cyprus Cup final against Canada. England women have now won the tournament three times in the last six years.

There were nine changes for Mark Sampson’s side from their last outing against Holland on Monday. Only Alex Greenwood and Jordan Nobbs, Captain for the first time after Stephanie Houghton was ruled out through injury, kept their place.

It was a fine cross from Nobbs that led to the match winner for England, after the ball was flicked on by Jodie Taylor in to the path of Arsenal striker Sanderson who finished excellently from 15 yards out.

Yesterday's win gives Sampson and his players a massive lift ahead of the World Cup which starts in three months time.

"I challenged the team to win the tournament and I put pressure on them to deliver. They've done that fantastically well," Sampson said.

"I'm very proud of the players - this will give us a lot of confidence moving forward towards the World Cup finals."

Victory in the final meant England had gone through the tournament unbeaten after defeating Finland 3-1, Australia 3-0, and drawing 1-1 with Holland in the group stages.
