Everyone is getting fed up of the John Terry saga which has dragged on far too long but what does it mean to Hodgson’s plans.
In response to Terry’s retirement he has lost a leader and a top class footballer with bags of experience. Since making his debut in 2003 Terry has gone on to make 78 appearances for England and captained the side from 2006 to 2010. He has captained the side since but for short periods of time due to allegations off the pitch.
All the years of watching England disappointed one thing has shone through is the passion of players such as Terry and Steven Gerrard. In recent years they seem to be the two players who have really performed for their country.According to Opta: England won 64% of games that Terry has played compared to 59% without him since his debut.Terry implemented Hodgson’s defensive plans perfectly at the Euros which played a huge part in us reaching the quarter-final against Italy.
He always gives 100% whether its club or country and I think it’s impossible for Hodgson to find an equal replacement. Ryan Shawcross, Chris Smalling and Phil Jonesare the favourites to make the squad with the first choice pairing being Joleon Lescott and Gary Cahill. Along with Phil Jagielka we have strong centre halves but with John Terry gone we have lost a leader who has won it all at club level. Hodgson will already be thinking of the World Cup qualifiers that are coming up next month and may even consider a controversial recall in Rio Ferdinand.
