Jermaine Defoe will miss the first two games of England's European Championship qualifying campaign. The Tottenham Hotspur forward, 27, will have an operation on a groin injury next week. He will be absent for a month, ruling him out of the Three Lions games against Bulgaria on September 3 and Switzerland four days later. Defoe suffered the injury before the World Cup but delayed an operation to take part in the tournament. He will be in the squad for Wednesday's Champions League qualifier against Young Boys, a tie the London club trail 3-2. "It might only be half a game he can last now, but it's getting less each time - the pain's getting worse," said Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager. "He wants to play and train all the time but he's got to have it done now. He can't go on like that."
