Crouch forced out of England squad

Peter Crouch has withdrawn from the England squad to face Bulgaria and Switzerland due to a back injury. The Tottenham forward, 29, was a doubt after he had to be replaced at half-time during Saturday's 1-0 home loss to Wigan Athletic in the Premier League. Crouch's absence leaves Wayne Rooney, Jermaine Defoe, Carlton Cole and Darren Bent as his four forward options. Fabio Capello, the Three Lions coach, has opted against adding another player to his squad - his original decision to name five striking options was due to the risk of Crouch dropping out. Ben Foster and Scott Carson did not take part in training on Tuesday, but there have been no moves to bring in another keeper suggesting they will be fine for the matches. Phil Jagielka, the Everton defender, has an ankle problem but Capello has plenty of defensive options should he be ruled out of either game.
