Coppell backs Shorey claim
01 May 2007 - 08:48:43
Reading boss Steve Coppell has backed Nicky Shorey to win a call-up to Steve McClaren's England squad.
Shorey produced another stand-out performance at left-back as the Royals edged out Newcastle United 1-0 at the Madejski Stadium on Monday evening.
McClaren's number two, Terry Venables, was in the stands to witness another impressive display and Coppell believes it is about time the 26-year-old full-back received international recognition.
"All he can do is put in the performances. He's been so consistent," Coppell told the club's official website.
"I don't think people should do the talking for him, let his football do that. His play is eloquent enough on its own.
"He's the best kept secret around. I think it's only time before he's in a squad, even if it's just so people can see what he's about."
Meanwhile, Coppell appears to have admitted defeat in his bid to keep contract rebel Steve Sidwell at the club.
Sidwell was omitted from the squad to play the Magpies and now looks set to leave the Madejski Stadium on a free transfer when his current deal expires in the summer.
"I wanted to see John Oster in the middle again, and Bryn (Gunnarsson) too," he continued.
"In my heart of hearts I desperately want him (Sidwell) to stay, he'll probably go but I have to try combinations.
"Oster's dummy was the catalyst for the goal. He'll never be an up and down central player, but he can do things others can't.
"He's more creative. Yes he takes more chances, but he's growing into the position. He could be good there."
