Controversial cow sacrifice plan for World Cup

01 Dec 2009 - 13:21:23

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa is expected to be blessed by the slaughter of one cow in each of its stadiums, the Makhonya Royal Trust proposed last week

The move is, according to the Trust's chairman Zolani Mkiva, "true African" but likely to upset animal right activist groups.

Mkiva explained the tradition: "We must have a cultural ceremony of some sort, where we are going to slaughter a beast.

"We sacrifice the cow for this great achievement and we call on our ancestors to bless, to grace, to ensure that all goes well. It's all about calling for the divinity to prevail for a fantastic atmosphere," Mkiva continued.

It will be the first ever World Cup staged in an African country and its organisers have been looking at ways to make it unique and put its past reputation to bed.

United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has said: "There is great power in this (South Africa's hosting of the World Cup).

"It is a time to present a different story of the African continent, a story of peace, democracy and investment."

Animal rights groups, though, are demanding consultation with them and, while they would not object to the ritual, would like it performed in a humane manner.

The National Council for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) has written to Fifa over the issue.

The plan is known to have support within the South African government, according to the Citizen newspaper.

Sicelo Shceka, the co-operative governance and traditional affairs minister, said: "The World Cup will be on the African continent and we will make sure that African values and cultures are felt by the visitors."

Officials from the World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC) have yet to respond to the request.

So WHAT! George Bush sacrificed thousands for the occupation of Iraq! That doesn't seems to bother the Western World! US let Dictator Marcos ruled Philipinee (for its own Military base) for 3 decades, while 80 % of the population lived on poverty. That doesn't upset anyone! US sold arms to both Iran & Iraq during their 6 1/2 years war, which cost millions of lives. That doesn't upset anyone! We eat animals of all variety in North America that doesn't upset anyone. We WASTE million of ton FOOD every year, while other part of the world starves doesn't upset anyone! Indians kill all kind of animals as sacrificed beast for centuries in the name of various gods. That doesn't upset anyone! Remember the famous 60 minutes interview of Louis Farakkhan by Mike Walace! Do "Youtube" before passing damn judgement on Africans We do not have the Moral Authority to judge others, as we are the one have hands full of blood of others..

Its just appalling to read that the Africans will be sacrificing a cow at each statdium for the upcoming Olympic games! In what way does this "culture" reflect "values" of any consequence. I think every right-thinking person should condemn it. I know nonvegetarians the world over consume meat of some sort but to "slaughter a beast" for good luck or the smooth progress of the Games is downright unacceptable. I had always felt that Africa needed the sympathy and assistance of the well-off countries to help them uplift themselves. But such so-called African traditions just show that they want to retain the primitive aspect of their tradition or culture. If you want luck they why don't they sacrifice one official at each stadium?! I'd then like to hear from the rest of the world whether that too would be acceptable as a symbol of African culture. Its a big "Thums Down" from me who is just a peace-loving free thinking citizen of this universe, with respect for all living creatures that inhabit this planet.

What a brilliant idea! We should have that sort of thing in the English Premiership. Would make it all much more exciting and provide burgers for half time. Submitted on behalf of the Meat Marketing Board!

Irrational behavior should never be supported. Sacrificing a cow will do nothing to magically make the games better... This is no better then praying to god, a good luck charm or anything of the sort. As for the argument that we should respect their culture... that's a load of crap. Would you respect them if they chose to have a human sacrifice? What if they sacrificed 100 cows? ITS IRRATIONAL! DON'T SUPPORT IT!

Personally i am not comfortable with the idea of slaughtering animals and calling on ancensters...but your argument of intending to make African values and cultures be felt by visitors is valid simply because thats what happens in Brazil, Italy, France, etc during global competitions like the football world cup!
