    Carson seeks England role

    15 Nov 2007 - 13:42:57

Aston Villa goalkeeper Scott Carson has set himself the target of becoming England's number one, turning up the pressure on Paul Robinson.

Carson is poised to turn his loan stay with Villa into a permanent move, having struggled to make his mark at Liverpool, with the 22-year-old setting his sights for the very top.

He said: "To be the England number one, that is the target. There is no point in me sitting around settling for what I've got.

"I've got to try and keep climbing the ladder, work hard and hopefully I'll get my chance for England and show that I am up to standard.

"I don't think there is a big gap between all the keepers from Robert Green to Chris Kirkland, David James and Paul Robinson. I don't think there is a massive gap.

"You've just got to keep working hard and hopefully get to that next level which is being the England number one. It's what you strive for.

"It has been a totally different challenge for me this season. Last season, when I was on loan at Charlton, I was having to make five or six saves a game.

"With a team like Villa this season, I am lucky to have to save one shot a game.

"That is why Petr Cech is probably the best keeper in the world because he has that one save to make and he does it.

"That is the level you have to aspire to. Cech comes for crosses, takes the pressure off the team, makes great saves, he looks so calm on the pitch."
