Carson cools England talk

Scott Carson has laughed off reports suggesting he will be England's first-choice goalkeeper for this month's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia.

Paul Robinson's form continues to be poor while David James struggled in Portsmouth's weekend defeat at Arsenal, so some pundits have suggested Carson, currently on a season-long loan at Aston Villa from Liverpool, could be handed his chance.

But Carson insists: "It should be good with England, but I think it will be mainly training for me.

"Ray Clemence [England's goalkeeping coach] has got more chance of starting a game than me at the moment."

Chelsea shot-stopper Petr Cech had said after Villa's 2-0 win against the Blues on Sunday that Carson was a "a great goalkeeper" with "a great future", comments that pleased the former Leeds United star.

"I had a couple of texts off people telling me about Petr Cech's comments," he added.

"It's good to get praise off somebody like that because he's the best in the world. If I can be anywhere near as good as him, then I'll be all right.

"I've just got to train hard and try to push Paul Robinson and David James as hard as possible."
