Carroll most expensive English player in history

Andy Carroll became the most expensive English player of all time when he completed a £35million move to Liverpool late on Monday evening. It eclipsed the £31.1m Manchester United paid Leeds for Rio Ferdinand, now Three Lions captain, or the £25.6m they handed over to Everton for Wayne Rooney. Carroll's move came on a frantic transfer deadline day, with the Reds forced into action by their Spain international Fernando Torres handing in a transfer request following interest from Chelsea. They eventually secured Torres with a £50m bid, with the Reds forced to pay out a significant portion of that to Newcastle United for Carroll. Carroll was the Premier League's record signing for a few minutes, with the move completed shortly before Torres signed at Stamford Bridge. He has one England appearance to his name, making his bow against France at Wembley in November. Tweet
