England manager Roy Hodgson sprang a surprise after naming Andy Carroll in his starting line-up to face Sweden.

Carroll was picked to lead England's attack alongside Manchester United youngster Danny Welbeck, with Ashley Young moving to the flank in place of the dropped Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The inclusion of Carroll signalled Hodgson's determination to go for maximum points against the Swedes, who were beaten 2-1 by Ukraine in their first match.

Sweden coach Erik Hamren meanwhile made three changes to the side who faced Ukraine, bringing in Johan Elmander, Anders Svensson and Jonas Olsson.

Sweden will be eliminated if they lose to England, who drew 1-1 with France in their opening game against France.
